Things to do before winter

Things to do in your garden before winter by MYKE Gardening

Decreasing temperatures and lower light levels remind us that winter is just around the corner and that fall will only be a memory soon.

If you haven't already done so, here is a list of the outdoor tasks you should take care of around the house and yard, before winter sets in for good.

  1. Turn off your outdoor water source and store hoses inside. This way, the water won't freeze and you can avoid damaging pipes.
  2. Remove dead leaves in gutters as they prevent the water from running off properly and speed up the formation of ice.
  3. Store outdoor furniture such as tables, chairs and barbecue. If you don't have enough storage space, protect them with winter covers, which will delay wear and tear.
  4. Store your lawn mower and empty its gas tank during the winter months.
  5. Spread a layer of mulch around the root zones of your plants and shrubs, and over newly planted bulbs as well. Remove it in the spring.
  6. Install protective structures around the most vulnerable plants. Wood or plastic fences, anti-frost fabric and plastic tunnels will work nicely.
  7. Shred the last dead leaves and let them feed the soil, or add them to your compost pile.

In several northern regions, November is a perfect time to carry out those last outdoor tasks, before winter spreads its white blanket for the next few months.
